Happy New Year to everyone in our NEST.
As 2012 begins, school library programs are under siege from those who don't understand how critical it is for students to be thoroughly grounded in the information literacy skills necessary to be a functioning citizen in the 21st century. Often, when budgets are under pressure as they are now in our weakened economy, funding for libraries is cut at precisely the time libraries are most needed.
The American Association of School Libraries' (AASL) president, Carl Harvey, has created a petition on the White House site for people to ask that government funding for school libraries be embedded in education funding. Read his post at this link:

We need 25,000 signatures for this to get on President Obama's desk. We can do better than that. Please share this widely. It takes under a minute to register on the White House site.
Please add your voice to this cause by signing the online petition for funding of school libraries.
